Who doesn't like cupcakes? Although my liking for these cloying little globs of sweetness doesn't border so much on love, I do seem to enjoy an occasional bite or two. I hardly bake them myself – the neighborhood patisserie does that for me.
But I love baking big cakes and decorating tiny cupcakes! Here's a sample from last Sunday: a rather gooey chocolate cupcake (with vanilla filling – not visible in the picture). But the plate (and not the cake) was the centre of all that fuss. Really!
I laid a strip of lace at a slant on the salver dusting a fine layer of cocoa over it. For a superfine layer use a tea infuser instead of dusting by your own hand. Next, I carefully lifted the lace off the plate for that lovely pattern, placed the cupcake at the periphery peaking it with whipped cream and a halfmoon oreo cookie (I ate the other half of the oreo moon, obviously). To break the monotony of an even chocolate brown, I finished with a good sprinkling of ground orange peel and a dash of chopped candied cherries. I didn't have any mint leaves so I stuck a fresh sprig of basil on that alabaster peak.
Ummm methinks I
cupcakes!
