Of Cabbages and Cauliflowers

I had a terrific winter harvest!

The aubergines – tapering purple beauties – were the first to appear.

Then came the tomatoes, broad beans, carrots, capsicums and the snow-peas. The hummingbird tree (barely 10-months old at the time) was in full flower even in late December and the tiny herb corner blushed with the lively red amaranth. But the stars of my terrace garden were a pair of latecomers – the cabbage and the cauliflower – the ones that had me biting my nails all through November and most of December. What a relief it was to see the first floret appear encased in a protective ring of outer leaves and the cabbage heads tightening, growing bigger and firmer by the day.

I grew my cabbages and cauliflowers in 8" terracotta pots using little other than organic fertilizer (cattle manure) and keeping the soil moist and well-drained all the time. And I was mighty pleased with the result.

The bugs, too, ditched my pretty veggies this year (what a delight!) and I am as happy as a lark 🙂
